Faculty Staff Textbook Loan Program (FSTL)

Program Overview:

The Faculty/Staff Textbook Loan program, funded by UNC Charlotte Business Services, allows eligible UNC Charlotte employees to borrow required textbooks from the Barnes & Noble at UNC Charlotte campus store for classes taken as part of the UNC Charlotte Tuition Waiver Program. In order to participate in the Textbook Loan Program, specific criteria must be met and an FSTL Program Application must be completed and submitted for each term prior to the deadline.

The purchase price of the books being borrowed is limited to $200 per course (for up to 3 courses per academic year).

Exceptions are not granted for late FSTL program applications or late textbook returns. An FSTL application form must be submitted before the deadline for each term.

This program is funded by profits from administrative area vending machines. Your continued support of UNC Charlotte Business Services vending operations makes this program possible.

How to Apply for the FSTL Program:

If you intend to take a course as part of the UNC Charlotte Tuition Waiver Program, please scan and email the application below by the application deadline to FSTextbookLoan@uncc.edu

  1. The signed UNC Charlotte FSTL Program application form (blank form attached below)
  2. Copy of your APPROVED Tuition Waiver form from Human Resources
  3. Copy of your class schedule. If you are taking more than two courses in a semester, please indicate which courses you want covered by the textbook loan program.

When and where do I pick up my books?

Approximately three business days prior to the start of classes, an email notice -- with your approved FSTL form -- will be sent to you, letting you know you may pick up your textbooks at Barnes & Noble at UNC Charlotte, located in the Student Union. Books may be picked up in the lower level textbook section. Please present your APPROVED FSTL form and picture ID to the cashier. If the approved textbooks exceed the course cap of $200, the program participant will have to decide which titles can be borrowed to stay within the allotment. All textbooks remain the property of the FSTL program, even if a portion over the $200 cap is paid for by the FSTL program participant. Any additional payment due beyond the $200 allotment (including tax) must be paid in full at this time by the program participant by cash, check, 49er ID card or credit card. Any amount paid in excess of the $200 cap is non-refundable, unless the book is returned with original purchase receipt and drop slip during the official drop period. Other books may be purchased that are not included in the loan obligation.

When and where do I return my books?

Textbooks must be returned by the date indicated on the Textbook Load Deadline & Schedule (shown above), to the FSTL administrator at the Barnes & Noble at UNC Charlotte campus bookstore.

Criteria for Participation:

To participate in the textbook loan program, you must meet the UNC Charlotte Tuition Wavier Program requirements.

FAQs about the UNC Charlotte Faculty/Staff Textbook Loan Program:

Are all of my books covered by the program?

Only used or new REQUIRED textbooks may be loaned to eligible employees as part of the FSTL program. Other materials, such as recommended texts, course-packs, supplies, computer software, etc., are not included in the program. The textbooks must be for coursework at UNC Charlotte.

How long may I borrow the books?

Textbooks are loaned for a period of one semester and must be returned within three business days following the final exam for the course, or immediately upon withdrawal from the course (within the University’s official drop period) or separation from employment, whichever comes first. Mandatory return dates are shown above.

What if I drop a course?

As long as a textbook is returned within the official drop period (with a drop slip), there is no penalty.

What if I leave UNC Charlotte?

If you end employment with the university, you may contact the FSTL Textbook Loan administrator to purchase the books for the full purchase price. Otherwise the books must be returned immediately upon separation or the purchase price will be deducted from your last paycheck.

What if I miss the book return deadline, or ruin the book?

Books must be returned in re-salable condition by the due date. If they are not returned on time - or if they are not returned in re-salable condition -  they must be paid for in full. Failure to return books or make payment will result in having the purchase price deducted from your paycheck, and will disqualify you from future participation in the program.

What if I decide to keep the books I borrowed?

If you decide you want to keep the books, contact the FSTL Textbook Loan administrator and you may pay the purchase price at any time before the end of the agreement period, without jeopardizing future participation.
